Compiled by the great French historian, archivist and producer, Stéphane Lerouge, The Sound of Lalo Schifrin (2024) is a magnificent overview of nearly seven decades of music brought to jazz, pop, film and TV by the legendary Argentinian composer, arranger, conductor and pianist, Lalo Schifrin.

This amazing – and nearly overwhelming – box set follows up on the five-disc release of the same name issued in 2016, which included the discs Mission: Impossible (1967), More Mission: Impossible (1968), Mannix (1969), The Cincinnati Kid (19655), Once a Thief and Other Themes (1965), There’s a Whole Lalo Schifrin Goin’ On (1968), Schifrin/Sade (1966), and the-then previously unavailable Rock Requiem (1971) .

The 16 discs here include the full album releases of all those in the previous box set – except The Cincinnati Kid – with the addition of Dizzy Gillespie’s Gillespiana (1960) and Free Ride (1977) as well as Cool Hand Luke (1967), Bullitt (1968), Enter the Dragon (1973) and the wonderful and never-before-on-CD Murderers’ Row (1967) – as well as many, many more tracks that Lalo Schifrin has touched or inspired over the years.

The box also covers a full disc devoted to Schifrin’s Dirty Harry music, another devoted to six East-meets-West films Schifrin scored, three whole discs featuring many of Schifrin’s other film and TV themes, one disc devoted to his Jazz Meets the Symphony recordings (1993-2011) and a full disc of Schifrin cover songs by other artists.

Much of the music included here is already owned by Universal Music. But Lerouge has gone the extra mile to license and include music Schifrin has done for other music conglomerates. For example, Bullitt, Enter the Dragon and the Dirty Harry music come courtesy of WEA while Murderers’ Row and Barbra Streisand appear courtesy of Sony.

Lerouge, who specializes in restoring and cataloging film music (particularly by French composers), has done a superb job here combing through the vast wealth of Schifrin’s jazz and film output – starting with the obscure Dinner in Rio (1955) by Lolo Martinez and his Brazilian Orchestra and winding up with Invocations (2011), the seventh and thus-far final of Schifrin’s remarkable Jazz Meets the Symphony series.

But it’s inevitable that anyone coming to such a massive bulk of music like this might have quibbles with some of Lerouge’s choices. For this listener, another full disc of highlights from Jazz Meets the Symphony, which was consistently among Schifrin’s best and most notable late-period projects, would have been very welcome.

I am also a little disappointed that the gorgeous, never-on-CD Paul Horn/Lalo Schifrin collaboration from 1965, Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts (now owned by Sony), could not be included – in full or part. It is entirely possible that licensing from Sony was outside of the box’s budget.

But if not, it’s a shame that some of Schifrin’s extra-film work of the 70s could not be heard here. I’m thinking of Schifrin’s Black Widow (1976), Towering Toccata (1977), the criminally underappreciated masterpiece Gypsies (1978) and the wonderful Stan Getz/Lalo Schifrin collaboration Children of the World (1979). All are owned by Sony, which would never do its own Schifrin box.

Which makes Stéphane Lerouge’s significant achievement here so amazing. The 16-CD set The Sound of Lalo Schifrin – which includes a complete interview of Schifrin by Lerouge in both English and French – is such a welcome and wonderful collection for us hardcore Lalo Schifrin fans.

My hope is that anyone who likes – or knows – even a little bit of Lalo Schifrin’s music will consider picking up this box set to discover just how incredible this guy is.
