Producer Creed Taylor (1929-2022) revolutionized the respectability and popularity of jazz with CTI Records. In fact, some of the most significant jazz of the last half of the 20th century was fashioned under Taylor’s guidance and supervision.
Taylor has been especially influential in the packaging of music. His records are as much art to see as they are to hear. With heavy, glossy, gatefold covers featuring stark design and striking photography, his records have the sound and feel of something bearing unusual class and great quality.
Additionally, he has recorded many of the world’s greatest jazz artists and single-handedly launched the careers of many legendary musicians. His recordings have always been of the first order. more…

Thank you to so many for the great amount of love, support and detail that was poured into this presentation. I am grateful to Didier Deutsch, who was there for so much of it; Masahiro Doi, for guidance and good vibes; Reg Bartlette, a significant resource in the 45s section; R.M. Kosht, whose book, “A&M Records Discography, U.S. Edition Including Associated Labels and Alphanumeric Index” made that section of this discography as complete as it is; Antonio Ferrarese; Pierre Gillet; Reinier Van Bevervoorde; Lorenzo Merlo; Dan Skea, whose Rudy Van Gelder research was invaluable; and Peter McLuskie. Thank you, too, to Creed’s son, John Taylor, Harry Young (the ultimate Lou Christie and Three Brothers specialist), Doug Watson (royalty among jazz discographers), Richard Warner, Susan Berlowitz, Bruno Anastasi and CTProduced’s Mark Cathcart, who continues to inspire. I am singularly grateful to my dear friend, the producer, journalist and CTI historian Arnaldo DeSouteiro for his immeasurable contributions to this resource. I have always felt that if you learned anything from me about CTI, it’s likely due to Mr. DeSouteiro. Thank you, too, to the late great photographer Pete Turner, a friend, and one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Many of the gatefold images you see here were provided to me, courtesy of Mr. Turner himself. Thanks, especially, to Creed Taylor for the music and Diane Toma for helping me make this possible. Each of you have helped make this dream – a celebration of some of my all-time favorite music – a reality.
